Most new cars are missing something.. Specifically door protection trim to help fight against door dings. For the last few years you could order it as an option for a lot of cars, but now you can’t even do that. What’s the deal? Is it for reduced drag coefficient? I’d rather lose 1 MPG and have a little protection. Todays cars are going to look like absolute crap in a few years.

The wife is envious of my door bumpers on the e46. She has door “bumpers” but they are painted, and I’m fairly sure plastic not rubber. Because GM doesn’t understand why you wouldn’t want your bumpers to be color matched.

the europe focus has an option where it pops out whenever you open your door and hides when you close it. its shit like this that makes me question why CEO’s decide which awesome features we arent worthy of....

In my experience, I find that door trim is fairly useless. All of the dings on my truck are much higher than where the trim would have been placed. The big ding on my car was also much higher than the trim location.

I think the only way to stop rampant door dinging is to force all manufacturers to use scissor or gull wing doors. Since they aren’t likely to do that, perhaps we can make them install clear door edge protectors on all new cars. That would protect both their door edge and my paint.

I don't understand protection devices. They'll get dinged and no one will replace them, so they aren't really making a difference

But then your car has ugly door edge protectors on it

That was the last M3 to have them.

Looking at the ones on my MDX, they’ve saved me from at least 10 hits. A few paint chips look better than 10 dents.

They don’t stop everything, but they do make a difference. I can see 10 or so hits on mine. Though I have managed to get a couple dings anyway. Presumably from other people opening their rear doors and the corner nearest the rear wheel well making impact first.

They don't stop everything but they do help a lot. When the kids were little, we went through a period where they didn't have much door control and my truck suffered for it. Slip on edge guards on the back doors of my wife's car Mae a big difference.

The thin clear stick-on variety don't look too bad and will prevent paint transfer. It's the same stuff they use for clear bras and rock protection. They came stock on the leading edge of the rear wheel flare on my WRX. They work.

Or what if they used little sensors in the handles (like parking sensors) that will stop the door just before it hits something. Some SUVs have a sensor that prevents the rear liftgate from hitting the garage door when it’s opened.

That’s a good idea. It only adds another two thousand dollars to the price for the hydraulic door package.

I once proposed that all people with small children should be required to own minivans with sliding rear doors. My wife vetoed that idea. My truck suffered as a result.
